Clinical Significance of Supravital Staining for Cancer of the Oral Cavity, Pharynx and Larynx

Abstract
Although supravital staining with 2% toluidine blue for the mucosal malignancies was known long time ago, it has not been used widely in the field of Otolaryngology in Korea.
The early lesion of mucosal malignancies in the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx are sometimes very hard to detect, and sometimes it¢¥s very difficult to find the biopsy site. Supravital staining solves these problems and further endows us exact extent of the tumor on the mucosal surface.
Author tested 27 patients with this technique and evaluated its clinical significance in accordance with the pathological findings.
All the malignant tumors were stained with toluidine blue supravitally in the royal blue color. Laryngeal lesions were tested under the suspension laryngoscope and operating microscope. Benign polyp and nodules were not stained at all, but papillomatosis were stained. Invasive carcinoma of the larynx was deeply stained.
The method of staining technique was described and original articles were reviewed.
